How Often Should You Change Your Oil?
The old 3,000-mile rule is outdated for most vehicles. Modern engines running full synthetic oil typically go 5,000 to 7,500 miles between changes, and some manufacturers specify intervals as long as 10,000 miles. The right number for your vehicle is in your owner's manual, and following it matters more than following a general rule of thumb.
Driving conditions shift that interval, though. Frequent short trips, extended idling in traffic, towing, dusty conditions, and extreme temperature swings all qualify as severe service under most manufacturer guidelines. That describes a lot of Treasure Valley driving, between summer heat and winter cold snaps, so some vehicles here genuinely need service closer to the shorter end of the range.
What Oil Actually Does
Oil does more than reduce friction. It carries heat away from moving parts, suspends contaminants so they can be captured by the filter, and helps seal the gap between piston rings and cylinder walls. As oil ages it loses viscosity, its additive package breaks down, and it stops doing those jobs well.
The filter matters just as much. A clogged filter can go into bypass mode, sending unfiltered oil through the engine. That's why we replace the filter every time rather than only at alternate intervals.
