Is Your Car Ready for a Treasure Valley Summer? Here's What to Check

Treasure Valley summers are no joke. Triple-digit days, long road trips to McCall or Twin Falls, and hours of stop-and-go traffic in the heat put real stress on your vehicle in ways that the mild spring months never do. And the worst time to find out your car wasn't ready is on the side of I-84 in 105-degree heat.

A little proactive maintenance in early summer goes a long way. Here's what Blazek's team recommends checking before the temperature climbs and stays there.

Air Conditioning

This one feels obvious, but it's the most commonly deferred service until the moment it fails. If your AC was a little weak last fall, it's going to be completely inadequate in August. Summer is when Boise drivers find out their system is low on refrigerant, has a failing compressor, or has a cabin air filter so clogged it can barely push air through the vents.

Getting an AC inspection and service done in May or June means you're not scrambling for an appointment when every shop in the valley is slammed with the same problem in July. It's one of the most popular summer services we see at Blazek, and for good reason.

Coolant and Cooling System

Your engine produces a lot of heat. In winter, that heat gets managed with relatively little effort. In summer, your cooling system is working at its limit to keep engine temperatures in a safe range. A low coolant level, a worn radiator cap, a tired water pump, or a cracked hose can turn a manageable situation into a full engine overheat fast.

Before summer hits its peak, it's worth having your coolant level and condition checked, along with your hoses and belts. These are quick visual inspections that can catch problems before they strand you.

Battery

Heat is actually harder on car batteries than cold is, a fact that surprises a lot of drivers. The summer heat accelerates the internal chemical breakdown of a battery and evaporates the fluid inside sealed units. If your battery is more than 3 years old and hasn't been tested recently, summer is exactly the wrong time to find out it's on its way out.

A battery test takes about 15 minutes. It's worth doing.

Brakes

If you're planning any summer road trips through the mountains around Boise, your brakes matter more than usual. Long descents put sustained heat into your brake system in a way that flat valley driving doesn't. Worn pads or low brake fluid heading into that kind of terrain is a risk you don't want to take.

A quick brake inspection before your summer travel plans is an easy win. If everything checks out, you'll drive with more confidence. If something needs attention, better to know now.

Oil and Fluids

Summer heat thickens the demands on your engine oil. If you're due for an oil and filter change or approaching one, getting it done before the hot months is the right call. While you're at it, have your transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid checked. The washer fluid one sounds minor until you're driving into the low summer sun on a dusty Boise highway and can't see a thing.

Tires

Check your tire pressure at the start of the season and keep an eye on it throughout. Heat causes tire pressure to rise, which affects handling and wear patterns. While you're checking pressure, take a look at tread depth. A set of tires with marginal tread that got you through spring might not be the right choice for a canyon road in July.
